Tommy Boy closed-up last year after Warners took over the label, but ex-MD Richard Chamberlain decided that the UK still needed a label dedicated to seeking out music from Europe and the USA for release to hip-hop and urban heads in the UK... at the same time DE LA SOUL had extracted themselves from the collapse of Tommy Boy, were planning to release their new material on their own label in the US and were looking for a label to release their new material in the UK, and 7EVENTY 8IGHTY RECORDINGS was born.
